BSNL Plans to add 22million GSM Customers Next fiscal
State run Telecom operator,BSNL plans to add 22 million GSM customers in financial year 2010-11.It plans to add 20 million 2G and 2 million 3G customers in next fiscal. This has been revealed by BSNL director Mr.R.K.Agarwal.
BSNL has alraedy launched 3G services in around 300 cities and is working aggressively on Mobile banking platform which it plans to launch very shortly. It has plans to go for aggressive marketing and advertising to attract and retain customers.BSNL currently has around 8.5 lakh 3G customers and the arpu of 3G customers is as is anybody’s guess higher than 2G customers. In BSNL’s case 3G customers give 40% more revenue than the 2G customers. Now the Mobile handset companies working on bringing out low cost 3G handsets,we can expect that 3G take up will be faster.Off late Nokia launched India’s cheapest 3G handset Nokia 2730 at the price point of Rs.4500/-.
Very soon BSNL will launch Mobile banking services through which one can send e-money orders through SMS.
“The real revolution is going to come when we launch our mobile banking services, on which BSNL is actively working. We have test-piloted a platform in Chandigarh, on which money could be transferred electronically through money orders by sending an SMS”, said Mr. Aggarwal.
BSNL’s plan of adding 2 million 3G customers is a very pessimistic one as 3G is new technology and offers variety of exciting services and also there is no competition in this segment. In such a environment and with service like 3G it should certainly eye on adding substantial chunk of customers who need 3G and do not have any other option. This is the opportunity for BSNL and MTNL to capitalise on it.
