After intense tariff war in voice segment, the turf seems to be shifting to data segment now. A lot of action is has started taking place in data card segment of CDMA based operators like Reliance , Tata and MTS. Tata Photon + is offering 10GB free data download in its promotional offer and Reliance has slashed its price from Rs 3500 to Rs 2299. Latest to follow suit is MTS India which has now slashed its price of its data card Mblaze.Premium to Rs 2299 and MBlaze standard to Rs 1999.
MBlaze premium also offers 15GB free data usage for 30 and free browsing on 3 websites yahoo , wikipedia and makemytrip. This is followed by promotional offer where it Britannica Encyclopedia & 4 Games worth Rs 1,450 are given for free. MBlaze Standard is now priced at Rs 1999 and other bundled offerings are are same as with MBlaze Premium.MBlaze offers download speed of 3.1Mbps and upload speed of 1.8 Mbps. Data download rate is Rs 2/MB in base plan. Subscribing to data plans will further reduce the per MB cost
Data card market is dominated by CDMA players presently as they are able to offer higher speeds than GSM . GSM operators have to wait for 3G to match the current speeds of more than 3Mbps offered by CDMA players. MTNL and BSNL are the only two operators in the country which offer GSM data cards on 3G technology but they are unable to capture the data market. In such a scenario Tata Phonton+ and Reliance Netconnect are making a killing and have captured major market share. Now MTS and Virgin have also joined this bandwagon to make use of this opportunity when there is lesser competition which is bound to grow manifold when 3G arrives in India.
