Nokia N900 and Maemo duo disappoints Mobile usersIn June 2010, Nokia had officially introduced its much hyped N900 officially in India with price tag of Rs 30639. However, after reading the reviews on various websites and blogs, it seems there is huge disappointment among mobile phone enthusiasts, mainly due to Maemo 5, a linux based operating system used in Nokia N900. You should understand the usefulness of linux before planning to buy it. Technically phone is good being equipped with fast ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor and 32 GB RAM. But inadequate third-party apps and the Maemo 5 platform are presently among the disadvantages of Nokia N900. The young Maemo linux based platform hasn’t yet developed adequate application base to lure the users.

Its fact that the whole lot on this device is run by software and for the majority of task software are not available from a trusted resource. One cannot use Ovi Music, as per Nokia, N900 is not compatible. Voice navigation system not available, however you may use OVI map’s limited version. OVI navigation is available in all Nokia devices, but in N900 it is missing due to Maemo. The apps available for Voice navigation system from other resources are just not worth. As per Nokia there are many applications for its N900, but most of them are not tested and may lead to serious security issues.

Some of key disadvantages Nokia N900 has :

  • Lacks charm of slim and light weight device
  • User interface only in landscape mode
  • Lacks Video call capabilities , smart and voice dialing
  • Camera interface and features seems outdated
  • No preinstalled voice navigation application
  • No voice recorder
  • No MMS
  • No handwriting recognition
  • Application for FM radio is missing
  • Limited third-party software availability

WELL…..I use a n900 and i’m quite happy with it.
It’s however is not a phone….it’s a UMPC with a phone interface. For normal mobile users it may not fit.But if u’r a linux geek,u’d love it.
Meego and Maemo can both be run on it and it do have FM RADIO,MMS, recorder,AND A LOT OF THIRD PARTY APPS.

I have been using n900 for 6 months now, i can confidently say this is the best nokia device to date. Navigation with Voice is available in the form of Synic.
    Phone Includes:
    FM Radio
Video calls can be done on Skype(pre-installed)

There are plenty plenty of apps, maemo is a tablet os, and since its open source there is a big community churning out apps for a longtime, not to mention n900 can dual boot other OS including windows 98, MAC os, Android Froyo.

the n900 only in landscape mode? I just checked it out and found out it is not true. Navigation? Why do you need navigation in India? Does not work anyway. Apps? Why apps when you have a mini pc?

  4. # User interface only in landscape mode
    - There are a good number of applications that work in portrait mode – the ones that matter.
    # Lacks Video call capabilities , smart and voice dialing
    - Video calling works with Skype and Google Talk
    # Camera interface and features seems outdated
    - Opinion and FUD
    # No preinstalled voice navigation application
    - But you can install some…
    # No voice recorder
    - Installed by default again.
    # No MMS
    - See last two, get over yourself. – N900 got MMS alot fast than the iPhone did
    # Application for FM radio is missing
    - But can easily be installed (yet again)
    # Limited third-party software availability
There are piles of applications in the App Manager…

There is enough trash on the internet. Please get your facts straight next time before posting your own.

I love mine and for me, it’s the best phone + mobile Internet device on the market.

I have had mine for about a month now feel that I have barely scratched the surface of what this device is capable of.

What a pathetic review! And he blames Maemo! Says its a young platform! Sir Maemo is the oldest of the platforms that are run on tablets. Have you heard of the Nokia N770?
