Bharti Airtel is all set to launch India’s first 4G services in Kolkata today. With this India moves to next genre of technology after witnessing huge excitement over launch of 3G services. Though the excitement did not translate into customer uptake but that is another story.
So the buzz for today is the launch of 4G services in India by Airtel , a technology which will enable customer to download at the speed of 100 Mbps while on move and 1Gbps while at a fixed location. This speed is quite unfathomable for a country where anything above 256 kbps is defined as broadband .
Mr. Kapil Sibbal Minister of Communication & IT is expected to grace the occassion . Bharti Airtel has earlier announced that it has roped in Chinese telecom equipment company ZTE for planning ,designing, supplying and deploying its BWA network in Kolkata.
The company had grabbed BWA licenses for 4 circles Kolkata, Maharastra, Punjab and karnataka and had paid Rs.3314.36 crore. Infotel broadband which was later acquired by Reliance had won BWA licenses for 12 circles. Other companies which had won BWA licenses are Qualcomm, Aircel, Tikona and Augere . PSU telecom companies BSNL & MTNL were given one slot of BWA spectrum in their circles and had to match the price paid by highest bidder.
