TRAI to formulate guidelines for Television Rating Agencies to bring transparency.

Telecom regulator TRAI has today released  consultation paper to formulate guidelines and set up a new mechanism for Television Rating Agencies in India. Presently in India rating of television  programs or TRP ( television rating points) as they are popularly known is managed by only one agency which is  TAM Media Research a joint venture between Nielsen (India) Private Limited and Kantar Market Research but for the past few years it’s credibility has come under clout and there has been demand from the industry as well advertisers to set up a new mechanism which is more transparent  and credible  as ratings form the basis for advertising rates and ranking of programs/channels  in television industry. So with the objective of creating a new mechanism  and guidelines for the rating agencies that ensures research provided by them is representative, credible and transparent TRAI has released this consultation paper and asked for comments from stakeholders.
