Vodafone reduces GPRS / 2G Data rates by 80%
Vodafone today announced the reduction in its 2G data tariff for customers using the data services as “pay as you go” basis. The new rates for GPRS / EDGE 2G data is 2p/10KB compared to earlier 10p/10KB. This 80% reduction is only applicable to all prepaid and postpaid 2G mobile customers. Initially the rate revision is only for Karnataka, UP West and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh circles. However, the tariff will be made available pan India in phased manner.
Explaining the rationale behind this Industry first move, Vivek Mathur, Chief Commercial Officer, Vodafone India said, “The overall internet penetration in India is low while the mobile penetration is several times higher. Most consumers will discover the power of the internet via the mobile. We, at Vodafone, want to accelerate mobile internet adoption through penetration, consumption and value addition. This 80% reduction in data charges for customers using 2G network is an important step in this direction and we are confident that this move will facilitate in faster adoption and better usage.”
