Wireless Subscriber Base crosses 973.32 mn, broadband base touches 100.76 mn in Apr’15
India’s wireless subscriber base has crossed 973.35 mn at the end of April’15 as per latest data released by TRAI. Total wireless subscriber base increased from 969.89 mn in Mar-15 to 973.35 mn in Apr-15, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.36%. While total telecom base which includes wireline and wireless services has crossed 999.71 mn in April it hit the milestone of billion mark in the month of May’15. In wireless segment total net additions of 3.41 mn customers took place as Bharti Airtel added highest number of customers i.e. 2.2mn taking its total wireless base to 228.25 mn. Idea Cellular added 1.3 mn subscribers with total base touching 159.2 mn. Telewings also performed impressively in April’15 with net additions of 1.1 mn ahead of Vodafone and Aircel. But Tata Docomo reported net loss of more than 3.7 mn customers in the same month and its total wireless base declined to 62.5mn . Vodafone had net addition of 7.5 lakh while Reliance was able to add 3.3 lakh new customers.
Wireline subscriber base declined from 26.59 mn at the end of Mar-15 to 26.36 mn at the end of Apr-15. Net reduction in the wireline subscriber base was 0.23 mn at the monthly decline rate of 0.87%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 81.01% and 18.99% respectively at the end of Apr-15. BSNL’s base declined by 2.3 lakh taking its wireline base to 16.1 mn. But BSNL’s wireline performance needs to be watched from May 2015 when it launched unlimited calling to all networks from 9pm to 7 am from its fixed line services across all plans including broadband combo plans.
Broadband subscriber base has crossed the milestone of 100mn in the month of Apr’15. It has increased from 99.20mn in Mar’15 to 100.76 mn in Apr’15 . Wired broadband base stood at 15.52 while wireless broadband base was 84.79 mn.Top five service providers constituted 83.40% market share of total broadband subscribers at the end of Apr-15. These service providers were Bharti Airtel (22.63 million), Vodafone (20.30 million), BSNL (18.02 million), Idea Cellular Ltd (15.01 million) and Reliance Communications Group (8.08 million).
