Indian Telecom Subscriber base touches 1058.86 mn in Mar’16

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,051.88 mn at the end of Feb’16to 1,058.86 mn at the end of Mar’16 with a monthly growth rate of 0.66%. The urban subscribers base jumped from 608.42 mn at the end of Feb’16 to 609.69 mn at the end of Mar’16 while the rural base increased from 443.46 mn to 449.17 mn during the same period. The monthly growth rates of urban and rural subscription were 0.21% and 1.29% respectively during the month of Mar-16.

 Total wireless subscriber base increased from 1,026.66 mn at the end of Feb’16 to 1,033.63 mn at the end of Mar’16, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.68%. Mobile industry witnessed net additions of 6.9 mn in Mar’16 where market leader Bharti Airtel added highest number of new customers with 2.5 mn net additions. State run telecom PSU BSNL continued its improved performance by standing second in adding customers with net additions of 1.5 mn. BSNL’s performance seems to be improving in the last few months in mobile space dominated by Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. Vodafone garnered 1.2 mn new customers while Telewings had 7.7 lakh new customers in Mar’16. Total wireless base of Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular stood at 251.2mn, 197.9mn and 175 mn respectively at the end of Mar’16.

Wireline subscriber base slightly increased from 25.215 mn at the end of Feb’16 to 25.225 mn at the end of Mar’16. Net addition in the wireline subscriber base was 0.01 mn with a monthly growth rate of 0.04%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers was 82.86% and 17.14% respectively at the end of Mar’16.

In broadband segment subscriber base increased from 144.87 Mn at the end of Feb’16  to 149.75 mn at the end of Mar’16 with a monthly growth rate of 3.37%.
