Mobile Subscriber Base crosses 117.4 cr in April 2017, Jio adds 3.8 mn
India’s wireless subscriber base grew by 4.42 mn in April taking its total to 117.4cr with a monthly growth rate of .38%. Reliance Jio garnered 3.8 mn subscribers on its network and its total base has increased to 11.2 cr. This is so far lowest acquisition number by Jio since its launch as the company started charging for its services from April but still it was the highest among all operators. Jio’s market share improved from 9.29% in March to 9.58% in April. Incumbent operators such as Airtel, Vodafone and Idea cellular will be relieved to see declining number of acquisitions by Jio as it has created massive disruption since Sep’16 affecting the financial health of the industry.
Airtel had 2.85 mn new additions taking its subscriber base to 276.5 mn with market share of 23.54%. State run telecom PSU scored better than Vodafone and Idea in getting more number of customers with net additions of 8 lakh. Vodafone acquired 7.5 lakh while Idea cellular reported net additions of 6.8 lakh. Vodafone now enjoy’s market share of 17.86% with mobile base of 209.8 mn while Idea Cellular has total base of 196 mn. There was combined net loss of more than 4.5 mn customers by all other operators. Reliance Comm’s net loss was 1.3 mn , Tata’s 1.4 mn and Telenor , which sold its operations to Airtel , witnessed net loss of 1.14mn.
Wireline subscribers declined from 24.40 mn in Mar’17 to 24.30mn in Apr’17. Net decline in the wireline subscriber base was 0.10 million with a monthly decline rate of 0.42%. BSNL’s wireline base declined by 1.8 lakh and its total base now stand at 13.5mn. MTNL lost 7888 customers in Mumbai and Delhi circles taking it swireline base to 3.4mn. Tata added massive 84000 customers in April while Bharti Airtel added 4761 wireline customers.
Broadband Subscriber base increased from 276.52 mn at the end of Mar’17 to 284.23 mn at the end of Apr’17 with a monthly growth rate of 2.79%. Reliance Jio , the market leader in broadband segment, enjoys market share of 39.60% with 112.55mn customers. Airtel follows second with market share of 18.38% with broadband base of 52.25mn. It added 3.12 mn new subscribers in April. Vodafone has broadband base of 39.76mn with net additions of more than 2.04 mn . Idea Cellular and BSNL saw decline in broadband customer base in April.
