Last week many of the private operators had announced heavy cut in 3G data tariff and in view of that MTNL too has planned to make its data plans more attractive. As per our exclusive sources, MTNL will very soon revise the free data offered in prepaid & postpaid data plans to make them more attractive in changed competitive landscape. But at the same time data rate in pay as you use plan or beyond free uses is to be increased from existing 1p/12 kb to 2p/10 kb.
Stiff competition has compelled companies to not only reduce tariff & cut cost but also to indulge into misleading advertising. Now a days it’s quite common to come across banner ads in outdoor or on web with screaming UNLIMITED offerings at throwaway rates especially for data plans. On seeing these ads one immediately believes that this is the plan he was looking for. But all that goes for a toss when one sees the plan details and finds that this “unlimited” is only a bogus claim and in reality it was an FUP plan. Many a customers would surely be misled if they do not closely analyse.
It has been more than one and half years since 3G services has been launched in India but the service has not really taken off due to high tariff. In the previous story of GPRS packs , we talked about the increase in 3G data charges BSNL from 2paise to 4 paise in last one year as a response to tariff increase by competitors. Coincidentally, just now I got the information that BSNL is going to slash 3G & 2G data usage charges for additional usage beyond free usage by 75% from 4 paise/10 KB to 1paisa/10 KB. The existing data charges is 4 paise/10KB for both 3G & 2G customers.
Now BSNL is planning to rationalize GPRS data pricing for 2G mobile customers. The most popular data pack of Rs98 which gives 2GB of free data download will now carry less free data download. One more new data plan at the price point of Rs.125 will be introduced which will offer 2.5GB of free data. There will not be any change in other available 2G data coupons.

Another yearly data plan too has been introduced which gives free data download of 100 GB valid for one year.
