After Bharti, Idea cellular & RCOM, now Vodafone too has joined the bandwagon by slashing the 3G data rates drastically. The company has also introduced many new 3G data plans and removed any additional charges being levied so far on the data usage in roaming .
Now the data plans start from Rs.25 for 25 MB and go upto Rs.1599 for 12 GB of data usage. For any usage beyond the free data ,the customers will now be charged 2p/ 10 KB. Similarly , the Pay As You Go (PAYG) rates for prepaid customers too has been reduced to 2p/10 KB from erstwhile 10p/10KB. This is the 80% cut in the 3G data rates and Vodafone claims it to be the lowest in the market. However , the customers in Delhi NCR & Mumbai may get the rates even lower than that from MTNL which charges 1p/12 KB.
At the time when other operators were raising their tariffs, MTNL had decided to reduce its 3G data charges in the month of July this year. The 3G data charges for prepaid & postpaid customers was reduced from already industry lowest rate of 1paise /10KB to 1paise/12 MB. We had earlier questioned the necessity of this move by MTNL then, though it was good for customers.
Telecom regulator TRAI has issued notices to Airtel, Vodafone and Idea cellular for entering into cartel by means of bilateral sharing of 3G spectrum. In the name of roaming arrangement these companies are offering their 3G services in the circles where these have not paid for spectrum prices.
